Sandtoft has been an environmentally aware manufacturer for many years although
green policies gathered real momentum during 2006. We believe that when it comes
to building materials used to construct and to refurbish, the key environmental
factor is the amount of CO2 generated in the manufacturing, supply and installation processes. Most building
materials by their nature require energy to produce if they are to meet today’s
performance standards. This applies particularly to roof tiles, considering that
the roof is arguably the single most exposed surface of a building. So, in order
to significantly reduce the amount of CO2 generated when creating a durable roof that will stand the test of time, there
needs to be a genuine commitment to the issue of climate change throughout the
business. Sandtoft is taking action across every aspect of its manufacturing process
from energy procurement to product design.
Sandtoft made the switch to 100% green electricity for all its roof tile plants
in November 2006 thereby drastically reducing the CO2 emissions generated in the production of the campany's entire roof tile range,
however, a number of products offer the specifier additional environmental benefits.
20/20 - Interlocking Clay Plain Tile
Through intelligent design the 20/20 interlocking clay plain tile offers the
same appearance as a traditional clay plain tile yet requires 35 percent less
material to cover the same roof area. Such a saving is considerable when one considers
that in the manufacturing process the number of KWh of electricity and gas used
and the associated CO2 emissions are proportional to the tonnage of natural clay extracted, processed,
dried and fired. Add the savings derived from material use to those made by switch
to green electricity and this product provides a massive 50% reduction in CO2.
The 20/20 interlocking clay plain tile has been rated 'A+' under the Building
Research Establishment's Green Guide to Specification.
BritLock and BritSlate
Sandtoft has been using recycled aggregates in the production process since the
1990's in its recycled slate products. Containing 80 percent recycled slate waste
and manufactured using 100 percent green electricity, BritLock and BritSlate's
green credentials really stack up.
Both BritLock and BritSlate have been rated 'A' under the Building Research Establishment's
Green Guide to Specification.
