History
Sandtoft started life in 1904 as a small clay brick manufacturer on the south
bank of the Humber estuary. The company moved into clay roof tiles in 1934 under
the leadership of Alec Oldridge with a factory on our Goxhill site. And in 1956,
the group made the transition into concrete tiles with its first concrete roof
tile production plant at Goxhill. This was followed in 1961 with the formation
of Sandtoft Roof Tiles Ltd and another concrete plant at the new Sandtoft site.
With Alec's son, Neville Oldridge, and Neville's three brothers now in control,
the Sandtoft group grew, and by 1980 was producing from eight concrete lines at
three locations. In that year, Sandtoft moved into large-scale clay tile production
with the acquisition of a clay factory at Broomfleet on the north bank of the
Humber. With the subsequent addition of a handmade clay tile operation at Barrow
Haven, and the development of a range of recycled slate products in the early
1990's, Sandtoft became recognised nationwide as a major force in roofing.
Today
With a turnover of around £35 million, Sandtoft is now the UK's largest independent
roof tile manufacturer, operating from 14 production plants across 4 sites, and
with a workforce of around 400 people. Sandtoft offers the most diverse and innovative range
of roof tiles, having led many of pitched roofing's most significant design developments
over recent years.
Choice
At Sandtoft we continue to place innovation at the heart of our strategy. Our
aim is to offer the architect and housebuilder the facility for every concept
in roof tile specification, from advanced labour saving designs to traditional
handmade profiles.
The choice of roofing materials today is influenced by a wide range of needs and constraints. These include aesthetics, tradition, location, sustainability, economy and life cycle. Sandtoft's product range can accommodate all of these needs. In addition, our Heritage Service produces bespoke roof tiles for listed buildings.
Clay
In clay tiles, Sandtoft offers a solution for any design, with a range that extends from its
ground-breaking new large format designs to the more traditional tile types. There
are new colours and finishes providing a choice of styles ranging from traditional
to contemporary, urban to rustic.
Concrete
In concrete tiles, Sandtoft is a major producer of a wide variety of high quality yet cost-effective
profiles designed to balance the visual and commercial requirements of the volume
builder, or to provide an economic alternative to natural materials for the homeowner.
All Sandtoft concrete tiles are manufactured using acrylic polymer coatings to
give stronger, long lasting colours.
Slate
Sandtoft leads the way in the field of recycled slates, with products having been developed with one of the UK's premier university
research teams in polymer resin technology. As a result, BritLock™ and BritSlate™
are made using over 80% recycled natural slate and are backed by British Board
Agrément certification.
